Westlock was incorporated as a village in 1917 and became a town in 1947. Since then it has continued to grow and is now a thriving community of approx. 5000 people. It is situated 85 km north of Edmonton and is accessible by Highways 2 and 44.
Due to a strong agricultural base and a growing trading area, Westlock has been able to encourage development and we boast facilities that few small communities can compare to. Many northern communities use Westlock as their base for both shopping and healthcare and this is reflected in recent developments in both areas.
We offer a full range of health facilities in a modern, up to date building, incorporating both acute and long-term beds. There is also an auxiliary hospital, health unit and a selection of clinics. Smithfield Lodge has expanded and is attached to the hospital.
With the introduction of the 911 emergency system, a brand new ambulance station was built and is manned 24 hours, supplemented by a volunteer fire brigade. The RCMP provides policing.
Both the public and separate schools offer grades kindergarten to 12, with French Immersion also available. There is a playschool, PIN program, and a range of childcare facilities. Distance learning and adult education programs are well utilized.
Both summer and winter recreation is catered for with ball diamonds, a serviced campground, 18 hole golf course, arena, curling rink, cross country trails and a nearby down hill skiing facility. Year round, the recreation centre has a competition and leisure pool, racquetball courts and weight room. A new outdoor concrete skateboard park thrills the kids. Both adult and children's programs are available in a variety of areas.
The town is further enhanced with a selection of hotels ( a new 76 room $3.8 million dollar hotel has started construction), community centers and restaurants, both formal and casual, making Westlock a desirable town in which to live and work.
